I was going to say the same as Cam - although I got the hint somewhere in blogland to use the Coles medium sized snaplock bags to put my patterns in (including any traced pieces or bits you can't fit back in the paper envelope) and I store mine upright in a couple of big shoeboxes on a shelf (although you may need more than a couple of shoeboxes!!)
